Virgin PTFE/polytetrafluoroethene, due to the molecular structure of its resin, is almost universally inert. Washers made from this material are impermeable to most corrosive liquids, vapors and gasses, even at elevated temperatures or when under pressure or in a vacuum. The material also has excellent electrical and dielectric proper­ties. A tendency to creep or cold flow under compressive load, limits the use of these washers in mechanical applications.
